Japanese Interior Design Tips
Japanese interior design is quite beautiful, they keep their rooms simple. They have beautiful artwork and furniture but they keep it simple. If you wish to dedicate a part of your home to Japanese design then try a spare room. Choose a room with a large window. When the Japanese design a room they do it with a very small space to begin with so make sure a window or glass door is in the room you are converting. Windows can open up a room , even if the room is small.
Japanese use what they call Shoji screen, these are the white screens that separate the rooms. They are also privacy screens. They are very delicate, they are made of rice paper and a wood lattice. They are very fragile so be very careful when placing these screens. They are great because they allow light and ventilation to come into a small room. Just by placing the screen in a room you can transform the room from American to Japanese with the start of the screen.
Bamboo chicks or Shoji curtain on the windows will also give the room a nice oriental feel. They can be kept rolled down and they roll up for easy viewing. When you are looking for furniture , keep in mind that Japanese furniture sits low to the ground. The actually encourage the use of tatami mats which can be used for sitting or even sleeping. You can place some big cushions on the mats for a comfortable sitting place. Keep the seating near the window for a great view.
If you really want to get that authentic Japanese look then place Japanese Ikebana which is a flower arrangement. Read up on these arrangements so you can get the placement down to a science. The reason why Japanese rooms look so spacious is because they put things independently and away from the other things in the room. It looks less cluttered and you can admire the artwork or lamps better when they are placed separately.
